Maintaining high professional standards and strengthening Montana’s environmental health workforce.

Montana Environmental Health Association

Who We Are

MEHA is a professional association for Montana’s environmental health professionals and registered sanitarians. We support excellence in environmental health practice across the state through education, networking, and collaborative learning.

Mission

Maintain and improve the standards of performance for professionals in the field of environmental health in Montana through education and outreach.

MEHA’s shared mission with the Montana Public Health Association and the Association of Montana Public Health Officials through Confluence Public Health Alliance is to unite environmental and public health professionals and amplify their impact on the health of all Montanans. MEHA serves as the state chapter to the National Environmental Health Association.

What We Do

We provide training, professional development, and peer connection for sanitarians and environmental health practitioners. MEHA elevates environmental health standards statewide and serves as Montana’s affiliate to the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA).

History

MEHA was established in 1951 as the professional membership association for registered sanitarians. Its original purpose was to provide professional development, training opportunities, and statewide collaboration for sanitarians. The first annual educational conference was held in November 1951.

The original constitution titled the organization the Montana Association of Sanitarians, modeled after the National Association of Sanitarians. A state charter was granted in September 1952.

Early objectives focused on strengthening performance standards, promoting consistency in code interpretation, improving interagency cooperation, and supporting certification of sanitarians meeting education and experience qualifications. Professional networking and improving members’ social and economic conditions were also core aims.

In 1970, members approved a name change to the Montana Environmental Health Association, aligning with changes to the national organization, which became the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA). MEHA remains NEHA’s official Montana state affiliate.

Testimonials

  • "Being a member of MEHA has been pivotal in advancing my career, providing the opportunity to attend NEHA for free through scholarships, which expanded my knowledge and provided fantastic networking opportunities. MEHA is also actively lobbying to develop legislation that will directly impact my career, pay, and responsibilities. Without a collective voice through MEHA, we would not have the infrastructure to provide the legislators the information to improve our ability to protect public health."

    Damion Lynn, MEHA President Elect

  • "Being a MEHA member is an important and valuable advantage if you are a sanitarian in the state of Montana. Whether you’re attending the annual education conference to gain CEUS to maintain your licensure, you’re interested in the lobbying or legislation that can directly affect your work, or you are just looking to being in contact with other sanitarians from across our state, a MEHA membership can help you with your career development, longtime goals, and provides opportunities for growth both locally and nationally."

Kira Flagstead, MEHA Secretary and RSMP Lead

  • "As a MEHA member, I have been given the opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic group of fellow members and others through Confluence Public Health Alliance. MEHA has been beneficial to my career as a Registered Sanitarian and to those new in this field!"
